11 - The Company Holiday Party - This past Friday
was the company holiday party and it was a great time. People
snapped out of their daytime shell and turned it on for an
all-out drunken blast at Shaw's Crab House. You name it, the
company paid for it. The waitstaff wandered with trays of
apps, wine, and champagne. The sushi and oyster bars were
stocked throughout the night. Two full service bars kept beers,
"martini shots," Washington apples, and other tasty
beverages sliding down my throat. And to top it all off, the
dance floor opened up half-way through the night and I did
my best to pull everyone in. My marketing co-worker - danced
with me. Attorney's secretaries - danced with me. Firm partners
- danced with me. Even the shy librarian girl - I got her
out on the dance floor. Photos will be available once I can
"borrow" them from the firm.
Nov
8 - Last night, one of my softball teammates walks
into the bar (aka batting practice) before the game and the
first words out of her mouth were, God damn it, Blagojevich
just won, visibly disturbed by the governor's reelection.
Another teammate then asked, oh, did you want Topinka to win?
”And her response was, oh, hell no.” Super Tuesday
had came and went. Any real surprises? No. Not one. Actually,
the elections were utterly predictable. And I'm not even talking
about the candidates that have won their positions in office.
I'm also talking about the conversations leading up to and
following the elections. Below are different aspects of the
Illinois election and how you should have seen it coming.
Governor
Rod Blagojevich beat Republican candidate Judy Baar Topinka
This lady proved to be a little nutty all throughout this
campaign. One of her prominently televised ads showed her
watching television with her dog. A Blago ad pops on the screen
and her dog runs out of the room. Then, she explains to the
camera, “The Governor’s ads are so negative, even
my dog can’t bare to watch it.” This might work
if she were running for high school student council, sorry
Judy.
Political
ads are and always will be negative
Blago ran a series of ads that you couldn’t hide from
that displayed Judy Baar under a poor light. Every single
ad ended with the tagline “What’s she thinking?”
They talked about her ties to President Bush and how she worked
in office under former Governor George Ryan (and for those
who don’t know, Ryan was sentenced to prison time just
recently for various scandals that took place while in office.)
This surely didn’t help Judy Baar, especially in a state
powered by liberal-democratic Chicagoan voters (everything
outside of the Windy City is republican). But wait a minute,
J.B., why are you crying “he’s so negative”
when a series of your ads ended with a tagline “Had
enough?” Hmm…
My
ultimate favorite – People letting corruption influence
their voting
As I mentioned before, J.B. was in office for Gov. Ryan’s
mess. All Blago had to do was mention that and once he did,
her steam toward unseating him was let out. Blago is no angel
either. He’s still in the middle of wrongdoing in hiring,
contracting and fundraising. People, isn’t that part
of politics, or even life? You do a friend a favor, he does
one in return for you. Anyway, the ultimate slimeball tactic
was for Cook County Board President. John Stroger was the
man in office until earlier this year when he suffered a stroke
before the primaries. People swore he was ok and moved forward.
In the primaries, he beat the County Commissioner, Forrest
Claypool, for the democratic nomination. Meanwhile, nobody
had seen John since the stroke. His “party” said
he was ok but it went months before any actual sign came about.
Finally, in late June, it was announced that he would not
be physically able to perform his duty and he resigned. So
who took over as the democratic nominee for the election?
Not Claypool, but Stroger’s son, Todd. Oh, and by the
way, Todd won yesterday.
Friends
and random readers, please keep this in mind: you will seldom
vote for who you want to win. It comes down to knowing who
you really don’t want to win, then voting for who they
are running against. Corruption and politics go hand in hand.
How corrupt someone is is your opinion. Do you hold lying
about the war more corrupt than hiring friends who donated
money to your campaign? Do you see lying about your health
so your son with little to no political experience can have
a shot at office as a worse offense than say covering up the
fact that someone under your wing is an alcoholic and has
been molesting interns for years?
This all
holds true for every election whether it’s Illinois,
Michigan, or some high school student council. People are
going to be pissed about the candidates and the outcome. We’re
going to find problems with the nominees because that’s
the system. We’re going to be influenced by the media
because 99% of you have never met anyone running and have
to take the biased opinions because that’s all we’re
offered. We’ve complained about it all before. We’ll
complain about it again in 2008. This time, don’t act
so surprised by outcomes seen coming from miles away because
I’m not going to buy it and neither should you. If you
want to make a change, act on it.

Receiver Andy Zalon celebrates after a touchdown. PTP! went on to win, 33-6. |
|
Wednesday was opening day for Chicago Sport & Social’s Flag Football League and Pump That Pigskin! came on strong from the very beginning. This preseason, many journalists had ranked them last in their power rankings due to rumors of poor team organization and lack of team chemistry. Though PTP! had some minor mistakes along the way, they proved many critics wrong in the opener, beating Wentworth Miller 33-6 at Candlestick Park (Field 4).
PTP!’s offensive attack, led by QB Bill Dvorak, started slow going three and out on the first drive of the game. From that point on, “Billy the Kid” went on to sling four touchdowns giving PTP! a dominating 27-0 lead late in the second half. Backup quarerback, Maureen Malloy, even got in the passing attack action adding one more touchdown pass to the box score.
|
Linebacker Mason Everett charges forward after his first interception of the season. |
|
The defense, led by linebackers Mason Everett and Wayne Milczarek, had Wentworth Miller shut out until the final minute of the game, giving up a hail mary touchdown caught by the “Asian Sensation,” Fo T. Tu.
Next week, PTP! looks to go 2-0 against Looking to Score. Game time is 9:30 pm ct at Candlestick Park.

Sept 20 - Flag football begins tonight!
Pump That Pigskin! will be kicking off their season at 7:30 pm at the corner of LaSalle and Stockton on Field #4. It's going to be an interesting season for this expansion team. Most of the members know each other but team chemistry is already being questioned. Only five players arrived at voluntary mini-camp this preseason.
Check back to Mace27.com all season for in-depth Pump That Pigskin! coverage.

Sept 18 - Yesterday, I was treated to the Bears vs Lions game at Soldier Field by Jen and her family. They're season ticket holders and wanted to treat me to a Bears game against my favorite NFL team. So I went with Jen, her brother, parents, and grandparents. They are all great people and strong Bears fans so it made it fun. The Bears distroyed the Lions and the family had their fun with me... as I expected. But if I had to summarize the game outside of my experience with the in-laws, I'd say it "sucked." I've been waiting to use that word because I just heard it for the first time yesterday. I had never heard it before until Bears fans we're throwing it at me similar to how roses are thrown at Miss America.
I really love how fans think that if they make a comment to you, it's the first time you've ever heard it. I don't understand random people who walk up and say "Lions Suck!" or "You Suck!" right in your face. I look at them and you can tell by their expression that they thought they were on top of the world.
Also worth mentioning are the two guys who physically layed into me, one with his elbow, the other lowering his shoulder. To some, I guess the pure satisfaction of saying "you and/or your team sucks" just isn't enough. These people need to really drive home their point with an attempt at physical domination. Good job, buddy, you're 5'7" and easily 50 lbs less than me. I hope you enjoyed your power in numbers with your "boys" giggling around you like school girls.
Was I bothered by these assholes? Not really. I was bothered far more by all the penalties against the Lions, even violating rules I have never even heard called before (it's going to be a long year if you keep playing like that, boys). In a lot of ways, having that much trash tell me I suck made me feel good about myself. If that much trash wants to let me know that I suck and do not fit in with their style and views, then I'm obviously not trash. After the game, I went back to one of the nicest areas of the city wear I live and later ate a wonderful dinner with my beautiful girlfriend at a nice restaurant just a block from me.
I'm not saying I'm better than those people who felt the need to go out of their way to inform me I "suck" or my team "sucks"... because I don't have to. They said it for me.

Aug 28 - Yesterday was my fantasy football draft with the league made up of guys I grew up with. 9 of the 12 guys in the league all rolled out of bed, half hungover Sunday morning and strolled into Eric's place for the beginning of what will be a thrilling season. The other 3 guys were conferenced in through the internet to make their selections. As always, when you get this group of our friends together, random thoughts, comments, and one-liners are going make the event that much more fun. Below are what I felt were the top 10 things said at yesterday's draft in order of occurance:
About 20 minutes before the draft starts, Travis walks in from the bathroom with the following proposal: "I'll trade a 10th round pick to anyone who goes to see what happened in there."
The draft gets delayed about 30 minutes due to technical difficulties and a late GM, but just as things are about to get underway, Eric's neighbor comes to the door. Eric, not happy with yet another delay, answers the door with, "Did somebody park wrong? What's up."
The draft is finally under way. Jason selects Larry Johnson with the first pick. Hogmire, conferencing in from Jacksonville through MSN Messenger, is now on the clock. For some reason, he's taking too much time for the 2nd overall pick in the draft. That's when it's clarified with, "Hogmire takes the most time because he's IMing 12 year olds to take their panties off."
Another one of the conferencing GMs makes their selection of Chester Taylor. A few of us look around the table and look at our lists with confusion. Finally Travis pops up and says, "Chester Taylor... who the fuck is that? I'm happy with that pick."
The first few rounds are done and people are starting to lose a little focus. Eric mentions that he still has WMU star Greg Jennings on his list. Howard replies, "If you're going with Greg Jennings, I'm going with Kyle Jennings." Then someone asks which Jennings has a better shot at playing in a Super Bowl. (for those that don't know, Kyle is a country singer we went to high school with.)
Scott's wife was around for the draft and she had asked why we have live drafts when Yahoo can just automate them. Eric's politely responds with, "Live drafts are fun... you can fart and stuff." Very fitting with the group of nine live drafters who were all out late the night before and were eating brats and nacho dip since a 3 half hour before the draft actually started.
Still in the first half of the draft, Bobby selects Matt Leinart. After an uproar over the selection of Leinart so early, Rolly says, "Who'd he pick? I thought we were only doing NFL!"
The bulk of the RB, QB, and WR stars had been selected, so it was time to move onto other positions. Then, Jeremy Shockey and Todd Heap go back to back. With a satisfying grin on his face, Travis says, "Ah, here come the tight ends."
Worth mentioning: 7th Round intermission for half the drafters to sing Cool It Now by New Edition
By this time, we're getting into the territory of some of the unheard-ofs. Along comes the selection of Dallas backup RB Marion Barber. Eric, not knowing who that is asks, "Marion Barber... wasn't she the lady on Happy Days?"
The final rounds had arrived and people were rounding out their teams with kickers. Kurt didn't have one and was scouring for who was left. Someone mentioned that Janikowski was still available. He comes back with, "I don't like a kicker fatter than me." But after a second thought, takes him anyway.

Aug 17 - I have become a fan of my friend Eric Stewart's blog, titled "An Estew Life." Recently, he was challenged to rank his alltime Top 50 movies. Mar 26 - Daisy passed away this evening. As I was feeding the fish their dinner, I searched around for Daisy because I didn't immediately see her. Ever since the newer fish joined the group a couple months ago, she had become a loner. She spent most of her time by herself on the eastside behind the plastic greenery. Tonight, she wasn't there. I figured that she was probably camping out underneath the rock when I spotted her motionless in the grass. Normally, Daisy had a beautiful orange gleem to her scales, but when she was found, they were pale as a ghost. Currently, the cause of death is unknown. Some of the others have been acting suspiciously and they will receive questioning in due time. Daisy was the first fish to move into the community and she will surely be missed.

Me, Howard, & Trav - the night of Rogers wedding, we broke away and had our own mini-party in the parking lot with Marie and Sara for a while. Just 3 guys who clean up pretty well. |
|
Last night of my final NRA Show - only a few people knew it was going to be my last show. Jamie and I partied with the best the DC office had to offer at Dick's Last Resort. |
|
Steve & I at the Bulls Game - Bulls vs Pistons just a couple days after the New Year. Merry Xmas, Steve-O! |
|
Brooke in the Hat - One of the defining moments of the Buckley Winterfest, Brooke in my hat with a can of Mountain Mist... we were all drained with a sugar high. |
|
Summer Booze Cruise - Meints and Trav came to visit. We celebrated Meints' birthday at Morton's with a nice bill and on this booze cruise. We're the only people in the photo with English as a primary language. |
|
Buckley Winterfest - Spent all weekend snowmobiling Buckley's city limits with this crew of people whose names I had only heard in stories. |
|
Jesus League - Schaumburg softball and a church team... yes you're wondering how I got involved with both. Well, I had a blast and would love to do it all again. Amen. |
|
Carolina Vacation - Brooke and I spent a week in my favorite place on Earth. The beach, parasailing, Wrightsville, cities named Clinton, and even a night with Greg. Awesome. |
|
Silly Hats - Dad and I were screwing around at Ron Jon's on a rainy day in Cocoa Beach. Though I never saw Steve play, we did catch an MLB spring training game... and NASA. |
|
Dustin's Wedding Night - I lived with the guy for 2 years and this moment in some ways summarizes the end of an era. No more Cubs in the backyard, no more 3 am burritos, no more "M&M's in the window." Congratulations Mr. & Mrs. Foster. |

Dec 12 - This morning when I checked my email at work (personal email always comes first), I had some mass mail from MLB.com. It was notifying me that tickets go on sale today for the World Baseball Classic. I clicked on it to see the different locations: Tokyo, Phoenix, San Juan, Orlando, Anaheim, and San Diego. Then I checked out the rosters and saw that a lot of big names were participating. So, as a long shot, I logged into the virtual waiting room (anyone familiar with buying tickets online for anything knows what this is) to see if I could score some. I figured my best bet would be the Phoenix games for two reasons: 1) Jamie Thomas, old high school friend, lives there and this would be ther perfect opportunity to visit, and 2) they host the first round where the USA plays. So, maybe 10 seconds of being in the VWR, and I get to purchase seats!
Fast forward five minutes: Jamie and I are now going to the first round in Phoenix, March 7-10, to see the US take on Canada and Mexico! I got us great seats too (1st level, Sec 114, Row 14).

Oct 29 - Yesterday was a good day. During lunch time, the Sox had their World Series parade downtown. I was not a bandwagon jumper and I routed for the Astros the entire series, but it's pretty cool to be in a major city when they've won a championship.
Then at night, I morphed into Stewie Griffin and headed to Cherry Red for my sexy party. There, I met up with my old roommate Superman and his wife, Supergirl. It was a good time as I'm sure you can imagine.

Sept 2 - The past few weeks have been the biggest mess. I have been searching for new jobs, quitting the NRA, and trying to figure out where I should plant my feet, whether it be still in Chicago, in Kalamazoo, or elsewhere. I had finally rid myself of the NRA (except the 6 phone calls within the first 3 days I had quit) and I found myself waiting to see if either position I had been pulling for was going to pan out. I saw it as "if either of these end up as a bust, I'm living in Kalamazoo." Well my friends, with no place to live and boxes of stuff piled up in my parents' garage, the answer came to me in the form of a phone call about 10:15 am et. The law firm, my first choice in this whole matter, had called offering me the position! I gladly accepted. So now, my immediate future is half complete. I have found my new career path, I just need to find a place to live. I have a few ideas on where I want to be, plus if you know me in any way, you'll know that this has gone through my head about a million times already. I just wanted to share that it's official: I will be back in Chicago asap and will start work at a much better employer starting September 12th. BOOYAH! (Happy Anniversary Mom & Dad!)

Aug 25 - So my last day at the NRA is tomorrow, can I get a hell yeah?! And with my lease up in less than a week, then a Coldplay concert in Detroit, a mini-vacation in Traverse City, and two companies want 2nd interviews, I don't know how the next two weeks are going to turn out. More importantly, where am I going to be? This has become such a huge guessing game, Vegas has gotten in on the action. Check out the odds below and check often as they fluctuate by the day.

May 30 - My new baby! - Ovation CS257 Celebrity Deluxe

May 15 - Some dinner last night. I went out to Schaumberg with Dustin & Hannah and we met up with her cousin & his girlfriend (yes, another 3rd/5th wheel story, it's just part of my life). We were undecided between Chevy's and Uno's, so Han Solo helped us decide... Uno's.
Jeremiah was our server and he was the highlight of the evening. The dinner started off with me ordering a raspberry iced tea and finding a chunk of onion in the bottom. I let him know and he kinda joked "oh yeah, you don't want onion in there, ha ha," but I wasn't very amused. I believe that triggered his uncomfortable table appearances for the rest of the night. When we order our food, Dustin & I get our own specialty pizza without mushrooms and tomatoes. The kid tells us that there are small tomatoes chunks in the pizza sauce. We obviously joke with him that he should strain them out and he doesn't get it. He offers to substitute a different tomato-free sauce and we tell him it's fine. Very disturbed, he moves on.
The biggest moment is when he comes back later with our food. There are three pizzas on his tray, none of them look alike (keep that in mind). He gives Hannah her personal pizza, he gives the other couple their 4-cheese pizza, and when he goes back to his tray to grab our pizza, we notice there's a huge chunk of broccoli in it. When we question the piece of broccoli, he makes up a bullshit story of "oh, that's what the cooks do to let me know there's no mushroom or tomato in it." I couldn't help but laugh right there. Then to make matters worse, much worse, he digs in the pizza with his finger and scoops the broccoli out. Dustin and I were crying we were laughing so hard.
Hannah's cousin asked if he could have some marinara to dip his 4-cheese pesto pizza. Jeremiah said that was a good idea because, I quote, "that pizza's not very good, I wouldn't order that."
When he came back to the table to check on us, he said, "hey how is everything going? Have you found anything else that shouldn't... uh, I mean, well... you know, my name is Jeremiah, just let me know if you need anything."
Jeremiah, I do not need anything more. I received an onion, broccoli, and your ratty finger in my pizza, all of which I didn't order. But more than that, you gave me quite a laugh and quite a story, that's all I'll be needing. Check please?

Apr 1 - I get on the train today and since it's Friday, it wasn't very packed. I take a seat next to someone and start reading the Red Eye (my morning routine). When the train gets to the Addison stop, the person next to me gets off and on comes this bum. She's short, she's dirty, she stinks, grey hair, black fingernails, a lot of coughing. And as I see her waddle on, I knew right then she was going to take the seat next to me. There were probably 10 different seats she had to choose from, but she chose the one directly to my right.
Like every person on their morning commute does, I'm listening to my mp3 player, reading the paper, and trying to ignore my surroundings. Normally, I try to make eye contact with others, not completely shut myself off to the world. Not today. I was slightly leaning forward, reading some nonsense about rappers pushing products in their music, and the whole time trying to time my breathing so there wasn't some funk with every inward breath I took.
Occasionally, I would glance up at the people sitting across from me and one girl kept staring at my situation. With every stop, Belmont, Fullerton, North & Clybourn, her stare was more intense. I was about at my breaking point at how much of the smell and the coughing I could handle so I leaned back to look around and see if there were any other seats available. As I did, that's when I realized why the girl across from me had her look of horror... the bum had her arm around me!
With my headphones on and my face in the paper, I hadn't noticed the bum pulled the ol' movie theater date trick. You know, the one where you yawn and slowly place your arm around your date. She got me. April Fools Day prank right on my shoulder. At the next stop, Clark & Division, I stood up, smiled at the poor girl across from me that probably wanted vomit from watching this scene and feeling helpless, and changed cars.
I'm sure many April Fools Days will pass, but none will be as memorable as the one I shared with my bum.

Feb 19 - Mace-A-Palooza 2 once again proved to be the hottest event that black history month has to offer. In a Woodstock fashion, people traveled from all around to come together for one festival of beer, bowling, and burritos. My friends were all able to place faces with the stories I had been telling.
The weekend started Friday night with some dancing action at Casey Moran's. Katy bought round after round as Dustin and I got our pictures taken with the raunchiest couple on the dance floor. From there, we ventured to El Burrito Mexicano because that's just what w do. Plus Matt needed to experience the Chicago ways I've taught Meints and Travis on their weekend visits.
Saturday afternoon, Meints, Trav, Matt & I had lunch at Murphy's. We walked the Clark strip and headed back home since two of the people in our group couldn't be away from a toilet for more than 30 minutes. (That's why I stay away from the jalapenos guys, so that doesn't happen to me.) We mainly just hung out around the apartment most of the afternoon. We watched Scary Movie 3, comedians on tv, read magazines, and napped. Yeah, we're not going to talk about the napping, it just happened.
Saturday night, the fun began. We rolled into Southport Lanes and grabbed tables right away. As the night went on, people came and went. Bowling was all it cracked up to be and then some. No one got oblivious, but there was one crying incident and one knocking-over-a-table incident. Other than that, everything was smooth. By the end of the night, Katy wanted to dance real bad and wanted to go to Beaumonts. Why nobody said no, I have no idea, but we went anyway. Upon arrival, no one was in a dancing mood... except her. So we hung out for a little over an hour, but took off before we got kicked out for either Katy falling all over the place or from Matt falling asleep at his chair.
Matt went with Katy & Jamie and Dustin, Trav, Meints, and I went straight to where we wanted to go all along... EL BURRITO MEXICANO one last time! Booyah and happy birthday to me!

Jan 23 - After working out today, I ran into Walgreen's real quick to pick up a few things. In between the store and the bus stop, a girl and I made eye contact; she smiles, I smile back. After a few steps past her, I hear "excuse me, excuse me." I turn around and she asks, "can I ask you a question?" Sure.
Hi, what's your name? (with a cute, gap-toothed smile)
Um, A.J. (why wouldn't I answer A.J.?)
Hi, A.J. I'm Shauna. So, do you date?
(couple second pause)
Yeah, I do. (thinking if I tell her I have a girlfriend, she'll get the hint)
Ok, so do you wanna go somewhere?
Wait, no, not that kinda date. I thought you...
Yeah, that's what I mean when I say date.
Sorry, but good luck with that.
Thanks.
Ok people, when you're in the city and a girl asks you if you date, she's hookin'. As I sat at the bus stop, I had one thought repeating in my head: I wonder what her rates are? ;)

Jan 2 - My friends, we've made it to another year. Congrats. I hope everyone enjoyed their New Year's Eve. Mine was filled with ups and downs, mostly ups though. As I look back at how my night went, let's hope 2005 follows the same map.
Show up, wonder around, realize that I'm not going get anywhere or meet anyone unless I just get out there and start talking. Some people I meet aren't going to be worth meeting, move on. I'm going to meet some good people in strange places, like in line for the urinal. Then these good people will introduce me to other good people, and better looking people!
At some point, the ball will drop and I will have no one around. Suck it up, move on. Find those good people or new people and rebound. Eventually, I'll realize that I need to live by my own favorite piece of advice. Then I'll make the most of what I have, finally connect with that person I've been eyeing all night and she'll kiss me goodbye.
And my advice, in case you were wondering: If you want something to happen, make it happen. The more you rely on fate or everyone's favorite cop-out "things happen for a reason, I guess it wasn't meant to be," the more you'll regret what you could have had.
It's a new year, people. 2004 was a great one but let's all make 2005 even better.
Booyah.

Nov 3 - Do people actually realize what they've done? I could rant so long that I could write a book. I will write a book on life someday, possibly soon, and this will be a chapter. I just want to share a few things. Take them as you wish. Judge me if you like. If your opinion of me changes, then so be it.
- The top issue determining who people voted for wasn't the economy, wasn't homeland security, wasn't environmental policies... it was moral values.
- During the first three years of the Bush Administration, the unemployment rate increased 1/3, 2.2 million jobs were lost, the country has gone from a $281 billion surplus to a $521 billion deficit, and debt has increased from $5.7 trillion to $7 trillion. (Source: NY Times)
I guess we've come down to throwing actual policies out the window. You know what will stop the unemployment rate from increasing? Or what will save the ozone layer? Or increase the quality of our educational system? It's obviously not a policy. It's obviously not a plan. Just get on your knees. Pray a little. Pray a lot. It's faith that will find your friend or family member a new job after they've been downsized. It's faith that will stop pollutants from destroying our environment and will miraculously save us from diesel emissions, lead poisoning, oil spills and PCB. It's faith that will build new schools and fund programs.
It's going to be a long 4 years. When you face a problem or hardship, don't look at me, look to the heavens.

Sept 26 - A little while back, my mom had sent an email to Mark Cuban, Dallas Mavericks owner and host of ABC's The Benefactor. She had told him about how much she had liked the first episode of his show and how it was the talk of the office. She also mentioned that I am a huge fan of his and mentioned a page of my website that I had made about him (Hero Profile: Mark Cuban).
Within a few hours, he had written her back saying thanks for being a fan of the show and he also said to her, "Wow.. tell him I said thank you.. Im honored. Do you have his address, I want to send him something fun :)" So she wrote back, amazed that he had acknowledged her, and gave him my contact information. At this point, she had contacted me, forwarded on the emails, and just shared the excitement.
Time had gone by and I just happened to check the mailbox today after not looking all weekend. Inside, there was a large tyvek envelope from the Dallas Mavericks. I opened it up and inside was a card reading, "Mason, Mark really appreciated the Hero Profile. Enclosed is his jersey and he hopes you will stay a true fan. Thanks" along with a Mavericks football-style jersey signed by Mr. Cuban himself! (Check it out)
Thank you, Mark Cuban, for everything. I will always be a true fan and I look forward to seeing the Mavericks rock the NBA this year.

Sept 20 - This weekend, I found out that my good friend Brooke Hansen will be losing her job within a month. As a good friend, I swore I would do my best in helping her find a new one. Well, Brooke, here's the list:

Aug 20 - Worst day in Chicago yet and it's barely past noon. The morning started off with me making a stop at the atm machine before work. I was going to withdraw some cash so I'd have money for this weekend but I became a little surprised when I reached into my wallet. I went to pull out my atm card and it wasn't there. I then dug deeper to find out that two credit cards were also missing. A little panicked, I rushed up to my office and checked out my online account balances to learn that last night someone had rung up over $2,500 at Lord & Taylor.
After tracing back my steps, I got a haircut with my card Wednesday night, Thursday during the day I had my wallet with me the whole time... the only time I was away from my wallet was for an hour at the gym. I looked to see what time the first transactions took place (because there was a total of 6 swipes made, 4 that went through) and it was 7:30 pm. So, I work out from 5:30-6:30, making enough time for someone to break into my locker, take a couple cards, and then drive out to Oak Brook to enjoy a shopping spree on my accounts.
As of this second, I think I've covered all my ground. Credit card companies contacted, security flags on my life have been placed, and a police report filed. The last thing I need to do is work together with the gym and Lord & Taylor to find out who the culprit is and beat the living shit out of them. You know, I'm a good person. I don't do bad things. I sure as hell don't deserve to go through this. I'm not going to make it my life mission to get revenge over this, but I swear to your God or any others that if I do find this person, him and I may work out something equivalent to $2,500 in medical bills.

Aug 4 - I received a call around 1:00 am ct last night. I woke up about the 2nd ring and said screw it, I'm staying in bed. What I missed out on was something I would have been proud of, even at 1:00 am on a weeknight. It was a celebration, a party that I wish I would have been a part of. Chicago has done good things to me but it has taken me away from a lot as well. This time it took me away from one a major accomplishment from one of my best friends... I missed the celebration call from Meints Headquarters, he had just won the primary for Comstock Township Treasurer.
I've known this guy for almost 20 years now. My first memory of the Meintster is kindergarden. It was somebody's birthday and he made it cool to shove the entire cupcake into your mouth. Most kids 5 or 6 years old timidly pull the paper off the base of the cake, maybe lick the icing off first, then slowly eat the birthday treat. No, Meintster barely took the time to rip the paper off and shoved the dessert into his trap. "Happy Birthday to who? It doesn't matter cuz you brought cupcakes baby, it's party time!" From that day on, I knew I had a good friend.
From that moment on, we spent a lot more time together. Chasing Lydia Johnson around the playground (he won that battle at the time), spring break in Panama City before drinking was cool, dominating the half court on Cook's Crooks CYAA team, doing Matt Bell impersonations off the diving board, slam dunk contests til we couldn't see the rim anymore, spending the night at each others' college campuses with blondes on mine and dead bodies on his, driving through zero-visibility fog back to Lansing because we wanted the best strip club 18 year olds could get into, driving to somewhere near Mount Pleasant because we had a fifth of Limon and nowhere else to drink it, searching for jobs after graduation even trying to start up our own trailer park cleaning service, and now just hanging out when I'm back in Kalamazoo for whatever reason.
I don't have many "best friends" but the Meintster is one of them. I may be on the otherside of Lake Michigan but I'm still pulling for him and supporting him as much as possible. For those of you still in the Kalamazoo-area that are getting this message, do me a favor: election day, vote Chad Meints for Comstock Township Treasurer!

July 30 - I am still in awe as I write this. I will try and keep this story as organized as possible, but please bare with me and you'll realize why it may seem like scattered thoughts... tonight, I saw Katie Holmes.
I went to see the new M. Night Shyamalan movie "The Village" with my friends Michelle, Liz & Brooke. Not a bad movie, I liked the fact that it's something that could actually happen and not aliens or seeing dead people. Afterward, Liz, Brooke & I went to Cold Stone Creamery for the best ice cream on earth, which is cake batter for those of you that didn't know. As we're sitting there, the girls were debating on which train station would be closest, the Grand or the Chicago. To stop it, I just told them we were going to the Chicago, end of discussion. So, as we're walking down State toward the Chicago stop, we're just talking and being normal. I then see a tall girl that looks to be our age walking with her family. My first thought was the usual: good from far, far from good. So as we get right next to the oncoming family, I try and look over without the parents noticing I'm trying to check out their daughter... guys, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Well, I'm two feet from this girl, we lock eyes, and it's Katie Holmes. My stomach knotted up immediately.
Now most people would be like "oh, it was probably someone who just looked like Katie Holmes." No. It was her. I adored her all through high school and college. Ask my high school sweetheart, she knows why I would watch Dawson's Creek with her. For the second we locked eyes, I knew right there it was her. And the scene was perfect. No large groups, no entourage, no James Vander Beek. The lighting was perfect so it wasn't too dark since it was about 9:00 pm. She was with her family, walking down State, probably coming from Water Tower Place or some Chicago touristy thing. She's amazing on screen, but in person she was 100 times better. I think it was the down-to-earth feel I got, but the crush has definitely resurfaced. Katie, if you're out there, and you want to know who that guy was in the blue polo shirt that locked eyes with you while you were walking south on State Street, it was me. Contact me. I can wait, but not forever.

July 19 - Put on my blue suede shoes and I boarded a plane. I touched down in the land of the Delta Blue in the middle of the pourin' rain. Ok wait, it didn't really happen like that, but I was Walking in Memphis this past weekend. Last month, my cousin Matt Carlisle ventured up here to Chicago to see what the Windy City is all about. We had an awesome time, so I vowed to come hang out in his town for a long weekend. So July 15-18, I boarded a Boeing and next thing I know, I'm walking with my feet 10' off of Beale... ok, no more Marc Cohn lyrics, just the stories.

June 21 - This past weekend, I hung out with my cousin Matt, who I only remembered meeting once in my life. I later learned that we had actually spent a day together when we were toddlers, banging on pots and pans on a kitchen floor. Anyway, he grew up in Arkansas and currently resides in Memphis where he attends U of Tennesee's dental school. We have been battling head-to-head in fantasy sports over the past few years and casually dropping each other IMs to see how things have been. He had never been to Chicago and wanted to check out the town, so I told him to pick a weekend and get on up here. That weekend has come and gone and what a time it was.

What I learned this weekend:
- Girls like thick, southern accents
- The animals certain Cubs look like shouldn't be discussed in public
- "Go Cubs Go" is only played by suburbanites
- People only buy tickets from scalpers that look like creeps
- Sometimes it's easiest to leave restaurants out the window
- Don't walk backwards because you may step in the only hole along your path
- Guys are tougher when their cabs are pulling away
- Nothing brings family together like big cities and big pitchers
Thanks again, Matt. Hopefully I'll see ya in a few weeks!

June 16 - Ok, I should have written this story the day it happened, but just be thankful that you're hearing it period. Now, if you've been checking out my site for funny stories and pictures, then you've heard and seen some cool things. This weekend, the weirdest thing happened to me since I've been here... or it's definitely a top 5.
I was headed to DSW and thought I'd take a scenic route since it was such a nice day out. The scenic route I chose was North Halsted. For those of you not familiar with Halsted, it is the street that runs through the heart of Boystown... the gay area folks. Anyway, I was walking down the sidewalk when a lesbian couple came out of a shop and one girl ran right into me. She apologized, but when she walked ahead of me I noticed that she was wearing real baggy clothes. She had those trendy, thin capri pants that all girls are wearing now, but hers were falling off her ass, along with her thong, to the point that I could see about an inch or two of butt crack.
Finding that strange and amusing at the same time, she kept walking ahead. When she got to be about 20 feet in front of me, she turned around, smiled, and dropped 'em! Yep, she moons me. I was in complete shock for a few reasons: 1) she was a total stranger; 2) Halsted is a very busy street in the area; 3) she was a slightly overweight, and unattractive lesbian with her partner. Just when I thought that was it, she continues to walk another half-block of Halsted with half of her ass hanging out for me. I looked around and it was obvious that it was for me since nobody was close behind me and there was direct eye contact two different times. Not knowing what to do and having nowhere to turn, I just sped up and walked by her. When I got up to her, she turned to me, smiled again and said, "Sorry about that." I said that it was ok and kept going.

May 26 - It's the day after the Show and one word describes the way I feel right now: depressed. Many won't understand but here's the best way to look at it in my perspective. I've been going to work every morning since September 2003 preparing for this one event. Many things have happened since day one: been to 10 Cubs games, had a couple of relationships, had 3 additions to the family, ate a lot of food and drank a lot of beer, I think you're getting the picture. Preparing for this Show has been what I've been doing for the past 9 months straight. Now, my event has come and gone, and it's a sad closure. It's time to start all over again. Before, everything was new to me. Experiencing a new life in Chicago and completing new projects at work. Now, it's back to planning for the same event but for 2005. That means 360 days until the next Show. I've had a good time and a good run, I just wonder if I have the patience to do the same thing all over again.

May 1 - Last night was a night to remember. For those of you that weren't there (which is probably everyone reading this), you missed a classic. Highs, lows, but an overall great time. Apr 26 - Went home this past weekend, had a great time! It started off with dinner at Applebee's with Steve-O and Mom. Then, Tina (Bo Bina) and I got dessert out at Steak n Shake. Saturday, I went to the hospital to see Rob & Tina's twins. Parker and Cole were born just the day before. It was quite amazing to see two little ones knowing they had just popped out 24 hours ago. From there, Bo Bina and I went to Steve's game to watch them take two from South Haven. Steve won the second game, where he ended up with 11 K's. After the game, we went to Roschek's for burgers on the grill. Never hung out with Deb and the fam before, so that was pretty cool. Went home briefly to watch a few episodes of the Family Guy with dad and Steve, then back out to the streets. Now I'm only saying this once because I'm quite ashamed of what I'm about to say, but I stood in line for over an hour to get into Wayside. Two things: I don't stand in lines for bars AND I HATE THAT PLACE. If it wasn't for the people inside, I would have gone home and watched the rest of the Family Guy episodes! Sunday, I met the family at Family Tree for breakfast. From there, we ended up going out to Portage where I got to see Travis & Danielle's baby (Miles Mason Anderson who was born the previous Sunday) bought new sunglasses, some paper, and a great burger from Chili's. Then, we rushed home so I wouldn't miss the Amtrak.
The highlight of the entire weekend: As I was packing, I found a baseball in my bag. It was the gameball from the game my brother had just won the day before, signed and dated by him. If nothing else would have happened the whole weekend, that would have made the trip more than worth it! Thanks man.

Mar 21 - This could possibly be the worst college basketball tournament I have ever seen. I've been following college basketball since 4th grade and running tournament pools since 6th. Anybody I'd consider pulling for has been knocked out. First it was Michigan State losing to Nevada, then it was Western losing to Vanderbilt. I don't even like WMU, but you have to cheer for the team your mom is affiliated with. Then, North Carolina loses to Texas and I'm left with nobody to cheer for. The only team left with players I know is Duke, and I'm not a Dukie in any way. Living in Chicago, you feel obligated to want DePaul to do good... not me. Those kids at the DePaul bars down here drive me nuts and they are the sloppiest team I've seen in the tourney this year. I'm glad UConn blew them out in Round 2.
Um... Go Cubs?

Feb 22 - Mace-A-Palooza was a success! It was merely a dream I had created a month ago, and it developed quite nicely. Last year's birthday was somewhat of a success, but it had more cancelations and ended up in throwing a bottle across the bar and my infamous quote "I want to die right here" on the 2nd step of my Country Place apartment. This year, I had less cancelations, but I know not to have certain expectations with certain groups. Plus, since this was an interstate gathering, excuses were a little more believable. The chain of events started Thursday night with an awesome dinner at Chen's with the beautiful pair, Alison & Emily. From there, it was off to McGee's with Dustin & Pat. The highlight of that bar night was Pat getting a facial from an erupting Bud Light. Nice trick. Friday, I went to dinner with Travis, Howard, Marcie the CC Girl, Pat, my lovely co-worker Kelli and her roomie Michelle. Pizano's was great and we moved to Mullen's from there. Can't go wrong when Sam Adams is the special. Thanks again to Kelli & the roomie coming out.
Saturday, the official day of Mace-A-Palooza weekend, started off with lunch downtown at Gino's East with Trav, Howard, & the CC Girl. Then a stroll down Michigan Ave and a tour of the NRA. Howard & I even got tarot card readings. I was told I will be in Chicago for at least another year and a half to two years and that I will start a serious relationship in 8 to 10 months... One sounds much more believable than the other, can you guess which one? Then we came back home, they napped. Ate again, this time at the Full Shilling where Sam Adams was the special. Came home to get the party started. Nothing gets you in the mood to go out like a little Saturday Night Fever. Trav and I practiced our Travolta moves while sipping on "Jack Beam." Then the rest of our crew showed up (Brad & Sarah, Sal & Megan, Dustin & Hannah, and Emily). After chatting, we finally headed out to John Barleycorn. There we met up with more people, starting with Alison & her friends, Eric & his date, Eliza, Mary, and I'm sure there were others :) It was a great time and special thanks to Eric & Eliza. I spent all night hanging out downstairs with Eric, Eliza, Howard, Alison, and a few others. Upstairs, Marcie & Travis danced their asses off... just not together. When it finally came time to leave, we made sure to stop off at my favorite post-bar food supplier: El Burrito Mexicano. I had the usual, chorizo con huevo burrito, and from there we walked home. Half of my party left Sunday morning, but I went to IHOP with the other half. There, Brian served us a much needed breakfast/lunch. It was the perfect ending to a rockstar weekend.
Before I cut this story short, I want to give a special thanks to those that came out. I got exactly what I wanted my birthday, my friends and people closest to me went out of their way (and even out of their state) to endure a Chicago weekend Mace-style! My thanks goes to: Travis Law, Chad Howard, Marcie the CC Girl, Dustin & Hannah, Brad & Sarah, Sal & Megan, Pat Riley, Kelli Stickney & Michelle, Alison Foster, Emily Roschek, Eric Rude, Eliza De Michele, Mary Judge, and Julie Nepil. If you made an appearance this weekend and aren't on the list, I do apologize. You're all good people and those I consider my best friends. 23 will be a good year!

Feb 2, '04 - First off, happy birthday Brad. Ah, we've had some good times together: "Dude, you're getting a Dell," drinking in speech class with Peaches, working our butts off for Peaches' special SS 300 project, Nom Myoho, and unsuccessfully flagging hookers. I'll see ya at Mace-A-Palooza! Poor Kelli, my lovely co-worker has to move out of her apartment because the building is rat-infested. Rats run through her walls, ceiling, and cupboards so her landlord is in the process of moving her out. Sick. Tigers signed Ivan Rodriguez today, Tram's team is upward bound!

Jan 26 '04 - I've made some more changes to the site today. This should be the last structural changes for a while. Now, I'll just update stories, photos, and of course the newest section of Mace's Place titled: STEVE-O! If you didn't click on the popup, then go there now and check out the goods. There's more than what's up there now, but those are still at work. Also, I finally added pictures from a few months ago from Kush's birthday, check those out too.

Jan 25 '04 - Well, it's about time to give the website a new look. It's had the same look for a while and I've had trouble coming up with new ideas. So, here's the one that will stick for the time being. It's been almost a full year since I moved from the GVSU site to the Mace27 domain. Things are still going strong and I'll try and keep the page update more often than I have in the past few months. As always, I'm open to any suggestions, comments, and questions.

Sept 6 '03 - This weekend, we had our first visitor: Brad Gordon. I’ll quickly share a few stories from our weekend, but only cliffnote versions.
Story One: We were walking down Navy Pier and decided to check out a museum. Dustin suggested that we go to the Museum of Science and Technology or whatever it’s called. So we decide to catch a cab. We told the cabby where we wanted to go and we figured it was right by Shedd’s and the Field Museum but no. Our cabby flew by those exits and just kept heading south. We looked around and tried asking him where we were going but he just mumbled something in cab driver language and kept on driving. So we just laughed the whole way to the museum. Once we finally get there, you could see Gary, IN across the lake. Our cab fare was $17! When we got out of the cab, some guy selling ice cream says to us, “hey guys, looks like you’re too late, the museum is closed.” It closes at 4:00 on Saturdays and it was about 4:25. Then, the ice cream guy says “well, since you’re here, you can at least buy some ice cream!” Oh man, what a mess that trip was. The train ride back home was even better. For those of you that don’t know about the south side of Chicago… don’t go. Unless you’re going to a Sox game or to the U of Chicago, don’t step foot over there. On the train home, some guy was reading something out loud, laughing, shouting, and chanting. Then he looks up and says to Dustin, “it’s your lucky day, I have some literature for you!” He was trying to convert Dustin into a Buddhist right there on the train. He made him repeat some saying 3 times: Nom Myoho Renge KYO! I picked up my cell as if I had a call so the nut couldn't talk to me. Then, to make matters worse, the train was having problems. It was stopped for a good period of time, then it would go for a few seconds and stop. We were stuck with this guy preaching to us and there was no where to run. Then he started calling out “NOM MYOHO, NOM MYOHO!” over and over. It was to calm him of the evil spirits of the train, he said. After that, the day/night was awesome!
Story Two: Brad and I were standing outside of a bar when we realized there was a $5 cover to get in. Ok, there are so many bars that there is no reason to ever pay a cover here so we left the line. While we were trying to decide where to go next, we saw some hookers across the street in the parking lot. Brad and I got the great idea to go over and talk to them. We ran over and one of them asked what we were up to. We told her that we were going to the bar. She then asked, “well, do you need a date to the bar?” It was then she realized we weren’t serious about her business and her and her friends started walking away from us. Brad started after them, trying to get them to stop and talk but they wanted nothing to do with us. While he was chasing after one, I took his camera and took a picture of him in pursuit. Then, one of the hookers turns around and says, “if you do that again, you’re gonna hafta pay for it!” We were dying laughing and let the hookers be.

Aug '03 - I can truthfully say that July 28, 2003 was the day the ball started rolling. Ever since college graduation, things had slowed down to a near freeze. My daily routine consisted of waking up, turning on the computer, and searching for jobs. It grew old... fast. Then, on the day that I mentioned, I received an email from a good college friend, Dustin Foster. He was recapping his miserable summer and much of his story sounded like mine. There were two key differences though: 1) he broke up with his girlfriend of 3+ years, I've been single for about that long; and 2) he was searching for work in Chicago, I was leaning more towards Detroit. After a series of emails we had written each other, he had convinced me to make an attempt at the Chicago area. His plan was to make a two-day trip with him, go literally door-to-door to potential places of work, and tell them who I was and what I wanted. Around this time, another good college friend, Angie Goyette, had sent me a job posting that she had received and thought "it looked like me." It was for a position in Chicago. It was mere coincidence since she didn't know I was now considering Chicago as a possibility. So I took my job posting, put it in my portfolio with the rest of my research, and went on down to Chi-Town with Dustin.
We arrived at our Palmer House Hilton hotel room and changed into our professional gear. From there, we went down to the action and stopped at a Subway for a water and some planning. Dustin made phone calls as I mapped out my targets. First on my list was the National Restaurant Association, the posting I received from Angie. Dustin waited in the lobby of the Smurfit-Stone building at 150 North Michigan Avenue as I rode it's elevator to the 20th floor. I walked in and asked to talk with Ms. Dohoney but was told she was busy. I told the receptionist that I had traveled from Kalamazoo to make this meeting work. She was impressed and asked if I'd come back 15 minutes later to meet with Ms. Dohoney. I waited the 15 minutes with Dustin in the lobby and rushed back up to Floor 20. I talked with Ms. Dohoney about the position and my eagerness to be a potential candidate. She said that there had already been 1st and 2nd interviews for the position, but she liked my assertiveness. She asked that I send her writing samples over the weekend so she could get a feel for what I had to offer. From that moment on, I was traveling around Chicago with Dustin on Cloud 9. The first place I went to sat me down and interviewed me upon arrival. Well, I wasn't so lucky with the other places I stopped but that's not an issue anymore.
I got home on a Friday afternoon after spending two days in the Windy City and one evening in a place nicknamed "Heaven." I immediately turned on the computer, touched up a few samples, and sent them on their way. Monday morning, I received a call from Ms. Dohoney asking if I'd come in for a 2nd interview. I was pumped. I made it for Thursday at 2:00 pm. Later in the week, one of Dustin's contacts called him in for an interview... Thursday at 2:00 pm. So, just like the Thursday before, we strolled on into Chicago with fancy clothes and high hopes. I went to my interview and he went to his. This time around for me, not only did I talk with Ms. Dohoney again, but I talked with the VP as well. Things went pretty good from what I was thinking. At the end of our chat, they asked for my references. Well, I hadn't even thought of bringing them along. They asked if there was any chance that I could have them to their office by Friday morning. I assured them I would have them there Friday, but didn't have any idea how since I knew I'd spend the night in Edwardsburg that night. After my interview, I met up with Dustin at a little coffee shop on Michigan Avenue and we shared our stories. Turns out, he got offered the paid internship position. I, on the other hand, hadn't been offered anything. To help my chances, I called home to have my dad email my references to Ms. Dohoney.
After talking over the endless opportunities that Chicago had to offer, we decided to take a trip up to the Wrigleyville-Lakeview area to do some apartment hunting. We called on a few that had "For Rent" signs and also had a guy named Charles show us three different apartments in the area. The first one he showed us was the worst of them all. Dustin and I decided we're not paying a grand to live in a dungeon. The second place Charles showed us was in an amazing location. It was a little apartment right across the street from Wrigley Field. When I say across the street, I mean if you looked out the window, you saw the huge "Wrigley Field: Home of the Chicago Cubs" sign. We liked the thought of living there, but the 8x8 bedrooms and even smaller living room didn't appeal to us. The last one Chuckster showed us was massive compared to the others in Chicago we'd seen. The downfall was the fact it was a little too north for our likings and our safety. Before we called it a night, we thought we'd try calling one more time on one of the apartments. Dustin gave Mari a ring and she was up and willing to show us one of her units available. The moment we walked in, we loved it. The area, the size, it was just what we needed and we could move in a few days early too. It only took us a car ride home to talk it over and decide we wanted that one. Now, the only problem was my job situation. We had an apartment picked out, Dustin had a job, I did not. We talked things over and Dustin's parents gave me an offer to live with their son that I could not refuse. I was excited to think that in just a week I could be living in Chicago.
On my drive home the next morning from Dustin's house, I received a call from an old co-worker. It was Kip, and he said that he was just called by a place in Chicago for a reference check on me. I saw this as they must have interest in me if they're checking references the day after my 2nd interview. Not long after that, my good friend Steve "Kush" calls me and said he had just gotten off the phone with them as well. I couldn't believe that this was all happening so fast. When I finally got home, I started to get ready to take a shower when the phone rang. I looked down and it was a 312 area code... Chicago. I answered the phone and it was Ms. Dohoney offering me the position!
In just a week's time, I had gone from visiting Chicago to coming to the realization that I would soon be calling it home.. I called Dustin to tell him that he better start packing because we're headed to the Windy City. He was just as excited as I was. So Monday afternoon, we took another drive to Chicago. This time we went to finalize our living situation. We walked all around the apartment to get a feel for the neighborhood. Here's what we came up with: Wrigley Field: 5 minute walk; Redline Station: 2 minute walk; Closest bar (and it has $1.50 drafts and live country music on the weekends): not even a minute away. We were sold! After talking to Jesse at my new favorite bar, Wrigleyville North, we walked on over to get the paperwork done with Mari. We walked in to her house, read over the lease, and finally signed the papers. At that point in time, it was all official... the keys in our hands meant Sweet Home Chicago! |
